Daffodils and the Talk of London
The first daffodils of 2024!
Claremore, February 2024
February 11th brought the first daffodils of spring to the farm… and a little overnight snow.
The first sowings are taking place under cover this week at Colonial Trades Farm as we prepare to bring natural, nutrient-dense vegetables to your table. The beets, lettuce, and spinach will grow out in the house for a few weeks before I get them into the ground in March and April and to your table in May.
London, February 1774
News of last December’s destruction of the East India Company teas at Boston Harbour has reached the coffee houses and Parliament. in London Much is made of the acts of a gang of Massachusetts Bay men and boys under cover of night who stole aboard ships and threw chest of China tea into the harbour. Within days, a similar act occurred at Philadelphia as opposition to the Townsend Acts, most notably the 1773 Tea Act placing taxes on China tea imported into His Majesty’s overseas lands.
Parliament considers appropriate responses to the distant protests as demands for compensation to the East India Company increase through London. Lord North is quoted as having said, “Whatever may be the consequence, we must risk something; if we do not, all is over.”
